Weight Loss Injections
The NHS is introducing a new weight-loss injection called Mounjaro (tirzepatide), alongside other options like Wegovy (semaglutide) and Saxenda (liraglutide). Here's what you need to know:
What is Mounjaro?
Mounjaro helps with weight loss by making you feel full, leading to reduced food intake.
In trials, users lost up to 20% of their body weight.
Availability:
Mounjaro is available through specialist weight-management services for those with a BMI over 35 and an obesity-related health issue (e.g., Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure).
It is not currently available from your GP.
At first will be limited to specialist services. In the future it will possibly be available in primary care, such as GP surgeries.
Current NHS Guidance:
Mounjaro and similar injections are currently only available through certain NHS specialist services.
The NHS plans a gradual rollout over the next few years, prioritising those with the highest medical need.
